Truly an entry-level model, the KDL-15G2000 is a 15-inch digital LCD television that offers a 4:3 image at 1024 x768 pixels of resolution without a whole lot of flair. That’s not to say that this unit is less than attractive, only that it is exactly what it purports to be — entry level. The screen is visible from a modest 170-degrees. That’s not great, but it’s certainly not bad either.
Despite its small stature, this IDTV has some intriguing features to offset its size. The list includes Picture Freeze, Picture Mode, power saving, multi-language onscreen menus, and Teletext capabilities. Not exactly an Admiral’s package.
In terms of sound this unit isn’t exactly top of the line, but then again it is a 15-inch display. The KDL-15G2000 comes with two 3-watt speakers that should provide adequate sound output for small rooms like the kitchen or the laundry room.
Connectivity is a little heftier than the sound package is on this model. Included is a standard AV input, an S-Video in, an RF in, two SCART connections, and one component input. Don’t expect to find an HDMI connection on the KDL-15G2000.
A life expectancy is not given for this model specifically, however the website of a competing manufacturer denotes that modern standards put the lifespan of most models in both the plasma and LCD categories at around 60,000 hours. That comes to just about 360 weeks of continuous use, but that kind of wear is unlikely. If you watch television for four hours per day, seven days a week, a modern digital television set like the KDL-15G2000 should last for roughly 40 years according to my calculations! There will most definitely be new broadcast and display technologies available for mass consumption before these things stop working, barring some kind of defect and assuming that Panasonic’s estimates are correct.
